Government approves list of strategic subsoil areas

On 14 February 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 132, which approves the list of subsoil areas of strategic importance for the sustainable development of the economy and the state's defense capability. Such areas will be provided for use through tenders for production sharing agreements.

The list includes 26 areas from seven regions of Ukraine with a description of the mineral deposits, their complexity and location.

Most strategic subsoil is located in Kirovohrad region, which has 11 areas, and in Mykolaiv region, which has 5 areas.

The most common minerals on the list are uranium and titanium. Among them, three areas in Kirovohrad and Mykolaiv regions have uranium reserves, while titanium reserves are located in two areas of Zhytomyr region.

The most complex area is the Stremyhorodske field in Korosten district of Zhytomyr region. The field contains deposits of:

  • Titanium
  • Vanadium
  • Apatite
  • Scandium
  • Fluorine
  • Cement raw materials
  • Construction stone

Unfortunately, the government did not provide information on the types of minerals and their complexity for most of the areas. The list is not final, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources will update it annually.
