Asters held an event regarding the prospects of connecting wind energy projects to the Ukrainian power grids
On 6 February 2024, Asters held an event for leading wind energy experts regarding the prospects of connecting wind energy projects to the Ukrainian power grids. Such connection is important for the sector in terms of optimizing the process of integrating wind energy capacities into the power system, changes in technical specifications, and the cost of connection. The event was started off by Asters' Senior Partner Armen Khachaturyan who spoke about the importance of discussing energy issues and improving the condition of the energy sector during the ongoing war in the country.
The participants discussed the following topics:
- Oleksandr Zhygaliuk, Head of Ukrenergo NPC Transmission System Development Department, spoke about the current capacities of power grids in different regions of Ukraine, as well as the planned expansion and modernization of power grids.
- Andrii Konechenkov, UWEA Chairman of the Board, made a presentation about the current state of wind energy development in Ukraine and the consequences that the full-scale war has had on it. He provided recommendations for developing connection strategies amidst the war and damages to infrastructure.
- Ihor Retivov, Head of DTEK Renewables Regulatory Division and member of UWEA Legal Committee, presented an overview of the working group activities with the participation of NERC and Ukrenergo NPC on improving the connection conditions in Ukraine.
- Asters' Partner Yaroslav Petrov and Dentons Partner Maksym Sysoiev presented an overview of international practices of capacity reservation and combating dormant connection contracts using examples from over 10 European jurisdictions.
- Asters' Counsel Marta Halabala spoke about the grids decentralization and its positive impact on wind energy projects in Ukraine.
- Asters' Counsel Viktoriya Demydenko focused on land-related issues concerning connection to power grids, in particular the acquisition and registration of land plots.
