Asters supports the debate on international arbitration in Kyiv

Asters Law Firm supported the joint event of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Young Arbitrators Forum (YAF), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) Young & International, the Ukrainian Arbitration Association (UAA) and the Young International Arbitration Group (YIAG) of the London Court of International Arbitration, held in Kyiv on 2 November 2016.

The event included the debate with involvement of jury and audience vote on the topic "Only counsel admitted locally under applicable law should be allowed to represent clients in international arbitration", as well as a key-note speech from Louis Flannery, Partner and Head of International Arbitration practice at Stephenson Harwood, London, on  the regulation of counsel conduct in international arbitration. The event brought together senior legal practitioners from leading international and Ukrainian law firms, as well as representatives of the Ukrainian government and business community.

Louis Flannery, Partner at Stephenson Harwood (London) and a key note speaker of the event, points out: "In the modern world, where we have allegations of dishonourable conduct made against those in power in almost every country, it is more important than ever that we as counsel and arbitrators are, and more importantly are seen to be, acting with the highest standards of integrity, especially when exposing our conduct on an international plane. It is therefore critical that when one so-called member of the community falls badly below the standards expected, that person is publicly exposed and the international community may stand together in condemning that individual."

As Young International Arbitration Group Regional Representative (YIAG) for Ukraine Yaroslav Petrov, Counsel at Asters, took active part in the preparation of the joint ICC YAF, YIAG, ICDR Y&I and UAA event that preceded the Kyiv Arbitration Days 2016 Conference, and acted as one of the event's moderators.
